Laxmi Villas Palace, Bharatpur
Laxmi Villas Palace, Bharatpur
Heritage
Laxmi Vilas Palace has been a prime witness to, and a participant in almost every eventful happening that took place in the princely state of Bharatpur – royal weddings, affairs of the court and royal duck shoots. It has played host to such dignitaries as the duke of Edinburgh, shah of Iran, king of Nepal and shah of Afghan. There was of course enough to entertain those who entered the portals of the palace. Feast and festivities lasted several days. And the palace kitchen ensured that only gourmet cuisine arrived at the dinning table. Bharatpur Information

Bharatpur, which is also called as the 'Eastern Gateway to Rajasthan', was founded by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1733 AD, it was once an impregnable well fortified city, carved out of the region formerly known as Mewat. The trio of Bharatpur, Deeg and Dholpur has played an important part in the history of Rajasthan. The place was named as Bharatpur after the name of Bharat, the brother of Lord Rama, whose other brother Laxman was worshipped as the family deity of the Bharatpur.

What To See

Keoladeo Ghana National Park is the prime tourist attraction of Bharatpur. People visit Bharatpur basically for the national park. Prince Bhamji of Morvi state in Gujarat converted this area into a royal hunting ground. Maharajas of Bharatpur organized Duck Shoots in the honor of Viceroy Lord Curzon and his party on 1st December 1902. This reserve was notified as a bird sanctuary but the erstwhile rulers of Bharatpur continued to enjoy their shooting rights over the area till 1972. The sanctuary was notified as a National Park in 1981. It was Dr. Salim Ali who initiated the conservation activities in the park. In 1985, Keoladeo National Park was listed in the UNESCO's World Heritage Site.
