Chennai, earlier known as
Madras , is the capital city of Tamil Nadu . It is far less
congested and less polluted than other metropolitan cities
of India. Chennai is major industrial hub of India . The recent
growth in Indian Economy has transformed it into manufacturing
and trading city. Various car assembly plants, heavy engineering
units and educational institutions are located in Chennai.
Chennai is one city in world that produces two hundred thousand
engineers per annum. In fact, the whole state of Tamil
Nadu is famous for intellectuals. World Chess Master, Vishwanathan
Anand and Indian President, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam are from Tamil
Nadu. Though there are no major attractions as such, it does
have the second biggest beach in the world, the Marina
Beach. It is a famous tourist spot but not good for
swimmers as the sea houses dangerous sharks. However you can
go shopping for rich stone crafts at various state owned emporiums
and local shops. The Government Museum and Art Gallery on
Pantheon Road , near Egmore station, has an interesting archaeological
section, and a bronze gallery. The archaeological section
has an excellent collection of items from all the major South
Indian periods, including the Chola,
Vijayanagar, Hoysala and Chalukya periods. The local
temples are quite beautiful. The South Indian food is one
thing which no one must miss.
