Jaipur, The city of love, legends and lore
Jaipur, the capital city of the state of Rajasthan is popularly known as Pink City . The Royal city of Jaipur is on popular tourist circuit known as Golden Triangle. It is located 300 km southwest of Delhi and 200 km west of Agra . The city of Jaipur is partially encircled with seven gates - the major gates are Chandpol, Sanganeri, and Ajmeri. Jaipur is a traveler's delight. It is an extremely colourful city, and in the evening light, the pink buildings display a magical glow, which is complemented by the vibrantly attired Rajasthani men and women. Camel drawn carts are characteristic of Jaipur's passing street scene. The city is also known for its exquisite jewellery. The Suranas (a particular caste) are master craftsmen in gold and silver jewellery.
The city owes its name, its foundations and its careful planning, to the great warrior and astronomer Maharaja Jai Singh II. His predecessors had enjoyed good relations with the Mughals, and Jai Singh properly cultivated the alliance. What To See
City Palace
This former royal residence is built in a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal styles. Contains an excellent collection on miniature paintings, costumes and armoury.
Hawa Mahal
The intriguing 'Palace of Winds' is really a façade built in 1799 to allow royal ladies to view the city from the windows.
Jantar Mantar
Magnificent stone observatory built by Raja Jai Singh in 1728.
Central Museum
A vast collection of portraits, miniature paintings, costumes and jewellery.
Maharaja Sawaiman Singh Museum
A superb collection of ancient weaponry, carpets and paintings.
Shopping
Jaipur is a shopper's paradise. Look for jewellery, miniature paintings, block prints and tie-and-dye textiles, carpets, brassware, blue-pottery, leather footwear, lacquer and filigree work.
Cuisine
Try local delicacies like Dal-Bati-Choorma, made of butter, cereals and sweetened bread pudding. Most hotels serve Indian and Continental cuisine. Typical Rajasthani vegetarian meals are a delight.
Festivals
Festivals worth witnessing are Teej, Gangaur and the Elephant March.
