Johor Bahru
Johor Bahru is the capital city of Johor state. The Arabic word ‘jauhar’ meaning jewel from which ‘Johor’ is derived, fittingly lends its prominence to this prosperous and charming state. Johor Bahru itself is well established as a fast developing elite city, a status contributed by its close proximity to neighbouring Singapore. This, in addition to the rich historical and cultural heritage makes it an attractive destination.
The city is filled with buildings from different eras. Harmonious integration of the different races is evident in the places of worship that are almost next to one other. The famous Abu Bakar Mosque is probably is the only mosque here that displays colonial features. Similar is the Royal Abu Bakar Museum built in 1866 and located within the grounds of the Grand Palace or Istana Besar. The museum has an amazing collection of artefacts, relics and crystal works. The Sultan Ibrahim Building is another noteworthy structure. While it houses the state’s government offices today, this 1904 building holds a sombre past as the Japanese base during World War 2, when launching attacks on Singapore.
